Production of Ukiyo-e Woodblock Prints Based on the Anime “My Hero Academia”

A new brand, “CRAFTALE,” launched by HIKE Inc., aims to carry Japanese traditional crafts into the next generation.

For its debut release, a series of ukiyo-e style woodblock prints based on the anime My Hero Academia has been produced by Takezasado, a traditional woodblock print studio led by Master Printer Kenji Takenaka.

Inspired by the climactic final arc of the globally acclaimed anime My Hero Academia, each piece features original artwork of Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, and Shoto Todoroki, newly illustrated by Takezasado’s carver and artist, Kazuki Nojima. Their dynamic movements are reinterpreted through the distinctive lines and layered colors unique to woodblock printing.

Created using Kyoto’s traditional woodblock printing techniques―refined over 1,200 years―these works merge the aesthetics of ukiyo-e with contemporary expression, resulting in a new form of woodblock art.
