Set in a cooperage in Fujimigahara, Nagoya (formerly Owari Province), this print depicts craftsmen constructing a massive barrel, with a small Mount Fuji visible in the background. The composition—juxtaposing the bustling human activity with the distant, symbolic presence of Fuji—showcases Hokusai’s characteristic humor and masterful sense of perspective.

Hokusai Katsushika's OPUS MAGNA “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji”

The masterpiece of Hokusai Katsushika “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji” series of works which depicts the changes of appearance of the subject in various ways depending on location and time.
Originally, this series was planned to be completed with 36 illustrations as the title suggests, but due to its popularity, 10 illustrations were added, making it a total of 46 illustrations. (The first 36 views are called Omote Fuji, and the additional 10 views are called Ura Fuji.) Hokusai was 72 years old when Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji was published. This is a masterpiece that shows his insatiable desire to create even in his old age.

Ukiyo-e artist Hokusai Katsushika

Hokusai Katsushika is a famous Ukiyo-e artist who was active in the late Edo period. Based on his outstanding descriptive ability and imagination, he created 30,000 works during his lifetime and left many masterpieces such as “Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji” and “Hokusai Manga.” His style had a great influence not only on Japan, but also on Impressionist artists such as Van Gogh, as well as Western craftsmen and musicians of the 19th century, who were in the midst of the Japonism movement.
