The Gion Festival is said to have originated when an epidemic broke out in the capital during the Heian period, and people welcomed the Gion gods to pray for the removal of disasters. The Yamahoko Procession is the highlight of the festival. It is also called a "moving art museum" because the floats are decorated with exotic tapestries. Today, just as in the past, they are works created in hopes of peace in the capital of Kyoto.
