This work depicts a gardenia in quiet bloom, standing still in the calm of early summer.
As the second piece in the “Kachōga in the Kyoto Woodblock Tradition” series, it represents the season of early summer. The petals are printed by gently layering pigments onto the paper, creating a pure white texture and soft sense of depth.Overlapping leaves, rendered through multiple printing blocks, give the composition a rich sense of dimensionality, with vivid shades of green bringing the entire scene to life. A quintessential example of Kyoto-style woodblock printing, the piece showcases the delicate use of white expressed solely through the printing process.
