Hokusai Katsushika, Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji "The Great Wave off Kanagawa"
Hokusai Katsushika, Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji "The Great Wave off Kanagawa"
Mt. Fuji in the distant, waves wildly swirling and collapsing, a feature of this work.
Hokusai's works are characterized by the contrast between motion and stillness, and dynamic compositions that incorporate Western painting techniques such as perspective. The large, undulating waves, the crashing crests of the waves, and the people curled up helplessly on the ship being tossed about by the waves are beautifully depicted using several different shades of blue.
