Mitarashigawa
Mitarashigawa
At Shimogamo Shrine, the Mitarashi River has long been a sacred place for “misogi-harai,” a purification ritual in which people cleanse their hands and feet in pure water—a tradition dating back to the Heian period.
This work incorporates a uniquely Japanese technique of expressing rain with drawn lines. The bold, rugged strokes evoke the intensity of a sudden summer downpour, adding a vivid sense of the season to the piece.
