Nijō-jō Matsudama
Nijō-jō Matsudama
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nijo Castle is renowned as the place where Tokugawa Ieyasu was appointed shogun and where the return of political power to the Emperor was later declared at the end of the Edo period. Among its many attractions—such as its historical structures and opulent decorations—this piece focuses on the view from the castle’s southeastern outer moat.
Overlapping with this scene are pine needles, symbolic of Nijo Castle’s long and dramatic history. The evergreen pine, which retains its vibrant foliage throughout the year, has long been considered a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japan. This piece also makes a thoughtful and auspicious gift for celebrations of long life.
