Spring is in full bloom, and cherry trees in bloom are depicted.
Spring is the season for the first work in the “Flower and Bird Paintings Using Kyoto Print Techniques” series.
The milky white color applied to the background in full is based on the gofun-hiki technique restored by Kenji Takenaka when he cooperated with the Musashino Art University Center for Art and Design's research project, “Saga Hon Yohon Restoration”. The petals are printed on the paper as if the paint were spread onto the paper, and the yellow pistils are expressed three-dimensionally by “ukashi-zuri,” a technique using tampo (a type of paper used in the production of paintings). The mica (kira) prints on the tree trunks give the cherry blossoms a dignified appearance, and this work is full of the techniques of Kyoto printmaking.
