Shinsenen
Shinsenen
Shinsen-en (Sacred Spring Garden) was an imperial garden during the Heian period, where emperors and nobles enjoyed boating festivities. The name “Shinsen” (“sacred spring”) derives from the ever-flowing clear spring found here. Today, it remains the only surviving structure from ancient Heian-kyo, with its large central pond still shimmering with water.
This artwork boldly captures Hojo-bashi, the arched bridge that spans the main pond. The vivid vermilion bridge and its inverted reflection in the water together create a striking visual charm.
